Bucking and growl on 2017 John Deere Gator XUV855D

Helping my uncle with his 855D and we're trying to figure out a growling noise paired with jerking when decelerating. Runs smooth when accelerating. Do these have any common wear points that cause that combo?

Have you checked the CVT belt and thoroughly cleaned both clutches using hot soapy water, then dried them out with compressed air yet? Try that frist

We haven't checked the CVT belt yet. Is this something we can do ourselves or should we take it to a dealer? Also, if the belt and clutches are the issue, would you expect the growling noise to be coming from that area or could it be something else causing the jerking sensation?

You can definitely check the CVT belt yourself if youre comfortable with basic maintenance and tools, just make sure to follow the service manual for proper procedures and safety. If the belt or clutches are worn or damaged, they can definitely cause both the growling noise and the bucking or jerking. But its also worth checking other things like bearings or drivetrain components, since they can cause similar symptoms. If youre unsure, a dealer or experienced mechanic can give you a solid diagnosis.

Quick update since it's been a while. We finally got around to pulling the CVT cover and inspecting the belt and clutches. Belt looked glazed and the primary clutch had a bit of dust buildup, so we cleaned everything out and reassembled. The growl on decel is still there, though the bucking has eased up a little. Next step is checking the secondary clutch and driveline bearings to see if anything's binding or worn. Planning to dig into that this weekend, so I'll post again once we've had a closer look.
