I found a broken snap ring on my 2015 825i

I saw that the spring was missing from the transaxle-driven clutch, and the snap ring was broken, but I am not sure if it was like that when I bought it last fall or if it snapped when the belt broke this spring, I am wondering if driving it like this could cause damage. Any thoughts?

Running the clutch without that spring and with a broken snap ring isn't ideal, it'll just cause uneven wear and damage over time. If you can, replace those parts before using it much more to avoid bigger issues. Better safe than sorry for real

The snap ring probably broke when the belt snapped, not before.
The sudden shock and whipping motion could do a number on those components.
Anyway, I also wouldn't risk it.
That snap ring holds the sheave on the shaft.
If that sheave comes off completely, you're looking at a lot more damage than just a broken belt.
You could chew up the case or other internals.
Parts aren't too bad on these, and it's a job you can definitely do yourself with some basic tools.

Yikes! Driving with a missing spring and a broken snap ring is basically asking for trouble, your transaxle could get chewed up fast, it is best to fix those parts before firing it up again

Thanks, I'll replace the missing spring and broken snap ring before driving it anymore to avoid further damage, and do you think just those parts will fix it completely?

So replacing the snap ring and spring should prevent more serious damage, right? Do you think I should inspect any other parts while I'm in there?
